FAQ
California tint laws & the basics.
General information, current as of 2026. California law (Vehicle Code §26708) can change and enforcement can vary. We install to legal spec and document your film's VLT. For your specific situation, confirm with us or the California DMV / CHP.
California Tint Law
California measures tint by VLT (Visible Light Transmission) — the percentage of light that passes through the glass. Higher is lighter; lower is darker. The same rules apply to sedans, SUVs, trucks, and vans: front side windows must allow at least 70% VLT; back side windows and the rear window can be any darkness; the windshield allows non-reflective tint only on the top 4 inches (above the AS-1 line).
Not legally — front side windows must stay at 70% VLT or lighter. The upside: even a near-clear ceramic film still blocks 99% of UV and rejects real heat, so you get the protection without the dark look. For a dark, private look, the back side windows and rear glass can go as dark as you like, including limo.
No mirrored or metallic (reflective) tint is allowed, and red, amber, and blue tints are restricted. We stick to compliant, non-reflective films.
Yes — illegal tint is a primary offense in California, so an officer can stop you for it alone. Fines start small but can reach roughly $100–$200 with assessments, and you may have to remove non-compliant film. We measure and document your VLT so you have proof of a legal install.
California allows medical exemptions with a certificate from a licensed physician or optometrist, but they're limited — generally only clear, colorless UV-blocking film on the front windows, not a dark blackout. Keep your documentation in the vehicle.
Yes. California requires a legible certificate on aftermarket-tinted windows, and we provide documentation of the exact VLT installed so you can show it if you're ever asked.
General Info
Not necessarily. Heat rejection comes from the film's technology, not its color. A light ceramic film can reject far more heat than a cheap, dark non-ceramic one — which is why we separate "how dark" from "how much heat it blocks" when helping you choose.
Most tint jobs are done the same day. The film then needs time to cure — we'll tell you exactly how long to leave your windows up (typically a few days) so it sets properly and any slight haziness clears.
Yes — old film removal is part of a re-tint.
